About Ms. John’s New Performance Piece
“Unconditional” is a tango for 11 women. It was inspired by a live TCU Symphony Orchestra performance of Astor Piazzolla’s Verano Porteño (Buenos Aires Summer) which was so engaging she found herself dancing in her seat. After hearing this music her family faced a series of frightening health challenges. As she searched for the right recording of Piazzolla’s work, she felt her own experience echoed in the music, the swings from elation to deep sorrow. Linking Piazzolla’s rendition of Spring (Primavera Porteño) to Summer gave her the development she needed to structure the progression of the choreography. In working with this talented group of dancers, she was able to build on their fierce strength and connection, and their advanced usage of contemporary dance technique. Incorporating tango dance vocabulary brought out a new sense of confidence and power in these young women. Tango music and dance speak to her soul – and the experience of making this work has been one of great joy and healing.
