BIO:
My interest in art was cultivated by series of wonderful art instructors and mentors from elementary, middle, high school, and then to undergraduate studies. As an undergraduate student at Wayne State University, I pursued two parallel pathways: the first path was the scientific coursework that would prepare me for medical school. The second path was artistic coursework meant to feed my soul. For this second path, it was my good fortune that oil painting studies were adjacent to the Cass Avenue Corridor Artist collective. This 1960’s New Wave movement, consisted of talented innovative artists, who applied their energies in multimedia art—sculpture, ceramics, drawing and painting. Being right in the middle of this energy informed my style. My first path of study: General Surgery was my focus for many years. In 2010, I recognized how much I missed that second path of study, and picked up where I left off. To re-invigorate my skills, I started to study with a few local artists, and visited countless number of exhibitions. ARTIST STATEMENT: I paint portraits, figures, and landscapes in an expressionistic-realistic manner. I personally photograph images of faces, figures, and landscapes that evoke visceral feelings, which I apply as paint, to the canvas. The photograph is merely the image of the model in a moment of time—the resultant painting is what really matters, over time, and with multiple viewings. I am proud to be exhibiting with TJAA at the BRIT in 2018. Thank you for this opportunity.
